Vicious dogs are just like loaded guns.

My God some folk are dumb. I read http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-cpresa20aug20%2C0%2C7940536.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines earlier and was throughly shocked. Not because the dog attacked that woman- even the most easy going mutt can snap- but the attitude of the people with the little kids is nothing short of lunacy. Sure all dogs can bite, but a dog of that size could actually eat a nine month old baby. And at 95 to 120 pounds nothing any one can do if one of those animals decides it doesn't like the look of you.
Can you imagine one of those animals in the wrong hands? Being trained to attack? Ergh. I like dogs a whole lot, but really animals of that size should be licensed and severe restrictions should be in place on who owns them.

Dog owners are the most ignorant bunch of pricks going. Dogs and babies don't mix. Ever.

I totally agree Docky. I was almost savaged by the family collie when I was three( he had been in a fight and I slapped him on the back-as three year olds are wont to do- but he almost tore my ear clean off) and I've seen lots of folk bitten by 'lap dogs', my friend's mother's yorkshire terrier was a particularly vicious little ankle biter who would snap at anyone that sat on his place on the sofa. Thing is, while these little shits can do damage, especially if they go for a face, imagine what a 120 pound dog can do? Seriously, it would be like getting attacked by a bloomin' bear or a lion. Certainly no place for a baby to be crawling about. It only takes a split second for a strike.

The bones of it was that, in the US, 3% of dogs are the bred-for-aggression-to-kill-you dogs - Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pit bulls etc. but they account for 80% of dog attacks requiring an ER visit, and 100% of dog-attack fatalities. Source: Slate, some time ago.

Bred by the Germans to kill they are - not to mock-maw with Junior.

Often, not always mind, they are owned by yahoos who might have trouble spelling the word dog. Almost universally, you hear these dogs described as "big softies" or "gentle giants". Which they may well be most of the time, but it just takes one time for nature - and years of careful selective breeding for aggression - to over-ride domestication in a dog's brain and the dog will rip the face off a toddler.

It's a man-made problem, we should fix it by discouraging their breeding for anything other than use as guard dogs.

Certainly not pets.

Collies are mental. A previous Mrs Maroon had one, a lovely big bitch about the size and shape of a Borzoi, you know the kind, the tall skinny ones. It was so elegant and loving (to us). When the path was muddy, it would prance through it like a ballet dancer not liking to get her paws dirty. Well, I was walking it back one day and I had it on the lead in the village, it was like carrying an empty lead, she was so good, when a tractor and trailer went past with two sheepdogs on the trailer. This thing went berserk after them, dripping white fangs, barking and nearly pulled me to my death. Ten seconds later it was back to normal. I still don't know what those two dogs said to her.

Springfield, no offence. I too have been a dogowner, I just had a massive blindspot where he was concerned. MY dog was different. One of the family. I don't think he ever bit anyone.

I understand you point, I had a dobermann for years, Springfield, years. And while he was a gentle soul, well behaved and good in public- he had a lot of socialization as a pup (very important) and was very well trained indeed. But, I kept him on a lead at all times and I always told folk not to pet him because frankly he didn't like it. He'd put up with it but you could tell by his body language he was uncomfortable with it as his natural instinct was to watch me. So best not. I never saw him snap or growl, he was a real trouper in the vet's office, but still better safe than sorry.
I love newfoundlands, the great big slobs, and I like akitas too. But I still wouldn't let my nine month old crawl around them. Babies don't have a clue what hurts and what doesn't, some dogs have a higher threshold to pain that others, babies pull and stick fingers everywhere, they use sensitive ears and coats to pull themselves to their feet. They pinch and dribble and do baby things. You could have a dog that 364 days of the years would never so much as even growl at a child- like our collie, but then one day can just snap. And as I and my ear can attest to, those days are costly.
I agree that big dog owners get tarred with the one brush, the most vicious of dogs in my view are Jack Russells, the hyper active little brats. But if that lady in the story had been attacked by her Jack Russell she might be getting a jab and a couple of stitches today. That's the real difference.

How sad and scary. I have never heard of that breed of dog before.

Jack Russells are mental, so are yorkies. I cannot tell you how many times I watched old ladies swing those vicious snapping choking things up in the air by their leads to stop them attacking me and the dobe, who ignored them with a look of great disdain. Nuts I tell you, nuts.

To the (anonymous, fortunately enough for his/her dignity) moron above: kindly learn to write before posting next time. We'll discuss actually THINKING of the dribble you put down at a later time.

"Of" is spelled with a single f, not "Off."
Questions end with the following symbol: "?"
It's called a question mark. Now I'm not a genius linguist by any means, but the name appears to suggest that it's used to identify a question, and as such, would be suitable to end your questions with.

"I" should be capitalized when the speaker is referring to him/herself. The first letter of a sentence should ALWAYS be capitalized, which makes your use of "i" all the more appalling.

Vicious is spelled with an "i" after the c, but incredibly enough, your horrendous spelling isn't the worst part of that particular sentence. I would have said that it's a textbook run-on sentence, but no textbook would ever publish the overgrown abomination you pounded into our collective screens. Really, you should have just broken that into four separate sentences (or, ideally, none at all). If you must allow your sentences to meander all the way from Alaska to Kenya, then you could at least be so kind as to use commas...

Now for the picky stuff: "you're" means "you are," and "your" indicates possession. Amazingly enough, you made the same error with "its," which suggests to me that you need to get better acquainted with either the function of the apostrophe in English written language, or its position on your keyboard.

Your unwarranted, irrelevant and downright juvenile use of the already hackneyed "get a life" slam does nothing for your case, either. If the best thing you can do with your time is write a horrendous flame of a comment on some blog, then perhaps you need to look into one for yourself. I, at least, acknowledge that I have nothing better to do at the moment, and was sufficiently cheesed off by the raw stupidity (not to mention the situational irony) of your comment to write out this whole shtick. That, and my grammar doesn't suck big, hairy donkey gonads.

As for that second-to-last comment... I really don't know what to make of it. Who is this "them person," and why are we upset about him/her hitting the dog? I'm intrigued.... Now, I can't speak for Mike Tyson, but I doubt I'll resort to ear-ripping if you tap me on the back. Most (sensible) dogs also exhibit some such restraint, come to think of it...

Your little diatribe is made all the more amusing by the lack of a period after "You bunch of idiots," which was really the point at which I knew I'd be writing this absurd counter-flame. Sorry if I've been overly eviscerating, but I am a card-carrying ass in real life and online, and have very little tolerance of stupidity. Especially when that stupidity, as it's wont to do, manifests itself in the form of baseless flames.

I expect your letter of resignation from the distinguished Offices of Internet Flaming shortly, followed by evidence of admission into primary school. If you're some kid somewhere, then I'm not apologizing if for no reason other than that you shouldn't be using words like "prick," regardless of whether your parents are there or not. Oh, and don't ask mommy what gonads means... she may not be happy (assuming she knows...)

P.S.: "Narrow-minded" needs a hyphen. XP

So you have a jack russell puppy and everything seems great. I bet you dote on it and spoil it...however I hope you don't have any other pets. My sister and I came home from dinner two nights ago to find that her jack russell of 2 years had viciously killed her chihuahua of 10 years. These dogs can easily become monsters. If I were you, I'd get that dog a kennel and never, never leave it alone with any other small, breathing creature.
