How Many Eggs is too Many eggs?

I've just had button mushrooms and a three egg/one yoke omelette. Side by side of course, not mixed. Etheline informs me that I eat too many eggs, ( roughly about 12 a week, but usually sans yoke) but I think that's hooey. Yesterday I had 30 grammes of porridge and skimmed milk ( yes, I weigh it, I am that sad), so it's not like I eat them every day.
Really, food should not be a complicated business.
But how many eggs is too many eggs and is that annoying harpy correct?

I'm happy with one a day, boiled. This morning I marmaladed the toast before I started the egg. It's going to be that kind of day.

Poor old sausage, but at least you had toast. I have not had toast. I miss toast. I think I will just keep saying the word toast all day until it loses all meaning.

Dear Self,
please to remember The Bigger of the Cats is faster than your fingers. Should you need to remind yourself of this stab yourself in the hand with the nearest kitchen knife.
Thank you.

I realise I'm not the most svelte of commenters, but that's not really relevant - because I used to be, and eggs is eggs is all I'm saying.

I tend to average about 2 a day, and mostly fry the little feckers, yolks and all. If I'm scrambling for with toast, or for in a burrito, or mixed in with pasta, then I can't use less than 3.

Of course one person's large egg is another person's small egg by 2. And now you have me craving duck eggs. Those are hardcore. They're like egg-flavoured eggs.

Blogger fatmammycat said...

Quite right Eolai! Duck, in all its guises, is delicious to me. The paramour makes roast potatoes using duck fat. It makes them super crunchy on the outside and steamingly fluffy on the inside. Nom nom.
Plink. What I wouldn't give for a roast potato right now. I would give the Bigger of the Cats for sure.

Supposedly it's one a day, but then if you are only having egg whites then it's probably ok. Also, what size eggs? I use medium (or small if my hens lay some but they are being lazy at the moment so I have to buy) and would average at about 5 per week depending (it could reach 12 though quite easily).
What do you do with all the yolks? Please don't tell me that you just throw them away?!

Down the drain Babs, down the drain. I hate egg yolk and only use one to give my omelette some substance and then it has to be nuked, totally cooked through. Although I make mine with lashings of chili flakes so it's pretty spicy too. Runny egg yolk is the Devil's smegma.
Morgor, was he keeling over from whatever it is people who eat a lot of eggs suffer rom.

Runny egg yolk with toast dipped in...that's the business.

I eat the equivalent of about 6 eggs per week. Between a quiche I make with about 5 (and baby spinach, mushrooms and goat cheese - bliss) and the random fried or scrambled on the weekend...or just one in the microwave with cheese after a work out, it's a good source of protein, cheap, easy, and tasty.

I don't think 10 eggs a week is a problem unless your doctor is worried about your cholesterol. Something tells me your cholesterol is just fine.

Nope, made no difference whatsoever.

as long as you're eating primarily the whites, i think you're fine. i'm right up there with you and eat about 12 whites a week....

i heard that 1 egg yolk has your daily cholesterol allotment... but that the whites alone have hardly any.

Excellent! I may now, armerd with internet back up, tell Etheline to go get stuffed.
Mmm quiche with spinach and goats cheese, drooool.

Too many eggs? If you were eating two dozen whole eggs a week, maybe, but good grief, egg whites have hardly anything in them at all. Besides, working out like you do, you need all the protein you can get, right?

Now, to a more important question: how many whole-wheat chocolate-chip-and-walnut cookies is too many? I'm pretty sure 2 of the 8 pounds I gained last month was pure cookie.

2:36 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

Hah, you're eating for two. Admittedly one of the two is pretty small and probably doesn't need cookies, but still, I think you're allowed.
Today's exercise will involve me breaking a pink sweat by running intervals on the mill, and kicking the crap out of Non Memnoch. I love Gingerday.

The Americans have this thing about egg white omelettes - not sure why. If you are constipated you may be eating too many eggs - the egg that binds etc. If not - you're OK. I guess.

3:53 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

I didn't know that, although it makes sense. But no, my fibre and fruit intake is pretty decent.
Egg white omelettes on their own can be a bit dull, but with crushed chili thrown in it's yummy.

Nooo runny egg yolk is so delicious!
Toast with butter and marmite dipped in mmmmm!! I can't believe you throw them down the drain (in actual fact its dodgy to do this you should put them into the bin, simple reason - if you put them in the drain and then you put warm or hot liquid down the same drain the egg will cook and block it up and then it's a vile job trying to clear that job up!)
Andraste - Egg and cheese in a microwave...ew!
Thought I don't own a microwave, it just sounds wrong doing that!

I eat lots of eggs but am rather icky about the yolk, chicken embryos bluuuuck. That white stringy bit sickens me so I always scramble them and you’re hardly going to make one strangled egg so I usually cook about three. Emmm I’d day I eat about 12 as well. Can’t be that bad still here ain’t we

Babs- it's not so bad. I just break an egg into a dish, cook it for about 30 seconds, then throw a slice of cheese on top and cook for another 15-20 seconds. It's just like a fried egg without the butter (mmmmm...butter)...you know those egg and cheese sandwiches that are so popular at Dunkin' Donuts? Just like that only without the bread.

You're supposed to have some protein within a half hour of working out, and I've found this to be an easy, quick way of getting it.

6:22 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

Kim, I want no part of that madness, 14 children, single, leaving in a two/three bedroomed house with her folks, oh yes. Oh no.

Babs, Nonny, if I could find chickens that could lay eggs with no yokes I'd be laughing. Some blasted eggs have double yokes, double the ming.

Andraste, you especially need protein after any kind of compound lifting, repair repair. In about an hour I will have a steak as big as my head and baked beans, a moat of baked beans.

Right now, back to the really REALLY boring work of trying to dry clothes. Bah. Stupid rain. I was hurtling back form the gym, but to no avail, everything is drowned.

I think the price of eggs is no yolk. You'd be cracked to shell out the price of a half dozen eggs, particularly on a fry-day. I get eggceptionally eggercised by this issue. As the Spanish farmer said to his hens...Olé. I'm thinking at this stage you are sensing fowl-play? You want me to stop, don't you....I'd say you are terri-fried.

Oh, come on Jonathon Ross, why are you on so late?

9:30 p.m.
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love the double yolk ones! It's from an abnormal reproductive cycle, the hens that lay these are apparently in their last days of laying according to my dad, I don't know if there is any truth in that though...
Nonny, the "stringy" bit is easily eliminated if you COOK the egg correctly, as in for the correct amount of time, if frying an egg I never turn them I always baste them, this is probably really bad for me, but as I normally poach (and never microwave - still ew!) it's not so bad.
Also Andraste - you cook fried eggs in butter?? Really? I cook mine in grapeseed oil and before I drop the egg in I saute a clove of garlic and the drop the egg right on top, soooo tasty!
Oh FMC - you can get pasteurised egg yolk in a bottle in the supermarket as far as I know, and it's what bakers use mostly when making things like pavlova or meringue or anything else really that calls for lots of egg white and no yolk, you can also get egg yolk in a bottle which they use for making creme anglaise etc;

Hello!
I'm a little late to the party...so to speak, but wanted to put in my two cents worth.

Eggs, poor, much-maligned food. Believe it or not, although eggs, chicken eggs, contain an incredible amount of cholesterol
(201 mg's per egg), they also contain a natural enzyme, a phospholipid that inhibits the absorption of the cholesterol. (The cholesterol is in the yolk, but read on before you start tossing those yolks.) Unless of course you monkey with it like seperate the white from the yolk or genetically engineer or process it in some way. See the study here: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2001-10/ksu-ksu102501.php

So eggs, eaten as a whole rather than parts, offer complex, complete nutrition and inhibit cholesterol absorption.
Don't throw those yolks out.
There is so much more to eggs than what you get in main stream media.

Pam
